about

"Restoring the Light" tells the story of a Chinese eye doctor who sells his home to establish an independent mobile clinic for the underserved in rural China - a brave journey of the human spirit that honors the power of individual will and seeks to inspire compassion for greater social change.

The main challenge this score presented was finding a sound that would fit the scenes without making them look over-dramatic or taking away from the reality of the characters and storyline. My approach was to stay away from sample instruments, piano, orchestra or anything cinematic, and find a fairly ambient yet human and organic sound.

As a result, the score is almost exclusively made with live recordings. Nearly everything you hear are real guitars, ukuleles, charango, strum stick, mbira, cajon, and a selection of ethnic percussion and string instruments treated with synths and effects. In addition, I invited my friend Tina Guo to record the cello parts, bringing a whole new level of expression and human touch that shaped the score all around. Hope you enjoy it!
